Girls in Science Trip

As part of our Science department’s drive to encourage girls to take up STEM subjects, Miss Rutherford took her GEMS club (Girls Excelling in Maths and Science) to an inspiration day held at the Newcastle Crown Plaza hotel. The workshop was organised by My-Kinda future in conjunction with Specsavers to look at qualities and skills needed to work in a STEM career.

The girls took part in a task that required them to use their creative thinking and problem solving to design a toy that could be mass produced to a high standard. The students then presented their ideas to STEM ambassadors from across the North East in a competition. This allowed them to demonstrate excellent communication skills and team work. We are pleased to say two of our students were part of the winning team!

The day highlighted the importance of having career goals and opened the students’ eyes to the fantastic career options they have to choose from. Girls can do it too!
