On Wednesday 31 March, Grace College had the privilege of welcoming The Very Reverend Geoff Miller, Dean of Newcastle, to be a part of our Easter Celebration assembly, in which we reflected upon this significant time in the Christian calendar and presented numerous students with certificates for their excellence and endeavour this academic term.
The assembly was a wonderful showcase of student talent. There were musical contributions from Rosie (Year 8) with her excellent rendition of Brahms’ ‘Intermezzo in B Flat Minor’. The school band and singers contributed a wonderful performance of ‘Amazing Grace’, as well as the feature of a fantastic vocal duet to ‘When You Believe’ from Disney’s ‘Prince of Egypt’ by Josie (Year 7) and Summer (Year 9). Edda and Holly, both of Year 7, gave a powerful recitation of Robin A Walker’s poem ‘The Key to Success’.
As a key part of the assembly, we also took a moment to commend Grace College’s Head Girl and Boy, Faith and Charlie, as they will soon be advancing on their scholastic journey towards higher education. Their efforts as Head Prefects have made them a vital part of our College, and as myself and Deputy Head Boy, Euan soon take up the mantle, we hope to follow in their footsteps. As a recognition of Faith and Charlie’s achievements, Mr Hall and Professor Mark Pike, CEO of the Emmanuel Schools Foundation, presented the pair with a commendation blazer of their choosing, as a symbol of their progression onto the exciting next steps in their academic careers, and a well-wishing from Grace College.
The Very Reverend Geoff Miller presented a poignant and reflective Easter Message, reminding us of the importance of Easter, and that hope does indeed spring eternal. Succeeding the assembly, the award winners had the privilege of hearing an extended Q & A with the Dean, in which we learned more about his busy role at the Cathedral, life during lockdown, and his past role as a RE teacher.
Once again, a special thanks to the Dean of Newcastle for his fantastic Easter message. We also thank Professor Mark Pike (CEO of ESF), to Mrs Aileen Conlon (Chair of Governors) and to Mr Steven Bates (Vice Chair of Governors) for their attendance.
