Class of 2008
I left Grace College then known as Joseph Swan after year 13. I chose to do a degree in Diagnostic Radiography at Teesside University, I qualified in 2011 as a Diagnostic Radiographer. I have since worked at various hospitals in the North East, and now work for UK Biobank as a Senior Diagnostic Radiographer.
I work in a research centre, we scan volunteers using diagnostic imaging. We use Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Ultrasound, and X-rays. Each volunteer has a brain MRI scan, a heart and abdomen MRI scan, an ultrasound of their carotid arteries and a full body DEXA (Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry) scan. They also have tissue samples and body measurements taken and complete a cognition questionnaire.
I plan the workflow and guide the volunteers around the centre, and manage a team of Radiographers who perform the diagnostic scans. I also scan the volunteers in all of the imaging modalities, and provide guidance on radiation protection and MRI safety.
All of the data collected contributes to global scientific research in many fields such as; heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.
After doing many years of work in a structured system. I now have a desire to work for myself. I’m looking to change my career path and go into the food industry, hopefully to open a community centred cafe local to Low Fell.
The only thing I wish I had earlier on in life is more confidence in my own abilities.
my advice would be take a chance, it will always pay off whether it be a success or a learning experience it will always be beneficial.
My biggest learning curve was realising my capabilities are far greater than I first thought, when working hard for something I want to achieve.
