Class of 2017
After studying Biology throughout my GCSE’s and A-Level’s at Joseph Swan Academy, I went on to study Midwifery at the University of York.
I now work as a qualified midwife at The Royal Victoria Infirmary, caring for women and their families throughout the childbirth continuum.
My role as a midwife and scientist involves:
-Supporting women throughout labour and childbirth including delivering babies
-Understanding the female anatomy and its functions
-Understanding the anatomy and functions of a new born baby
-Recognising adaptations of the female body throughout pregnancy and in the postnatal period
-Monitoring chemical reactions in the body through the means of various medications and hormones
-Completing examinations of the new born including their respiratory and circulatory systems

How COVID-19 has affected my role:
Strains on the NHS i.e. staff shortages due to illness and shielding etc. I have had to care for COVID positive women and babies and have been involved in more complex/ high risk cases because of this. I have provided] extra support to women whilst their partners are unable to attend stages of their labour and birth too which has had a huge impact on the mental health of some women understandably. I have also had to continuously research the risk of COVID-19 and numerous vaccines on pregnant women and babies in utero and their effects on maternal choices i.e. breastfeeding.
My future plans:
-Continue to educate women about their anatomy and the functions it can perform
-Become a mentor to future student and newly qualified midwives
-Progress in my job role to specialise in a specific midwifery field, i.e. high risk care, diabetes, sonography, multiple pregnancies (e.g. twins/ triplets)
